Kitchen Cabinets on a Affordable Budget

June 21st, 2017

The vast array of details within a kitchen remodel are simply overwhelming. It doesn’t help that the most integral element of any kitchen is both complicated and expensive – the cabinets. A myriad of custom racks and organizers is available, offering convenient solutions for unique storage needs such as wine bottles, special-occasion china, and the dreaded pots and pans. Here are some tips for getting through this daunting project with an intact budget.

First, consider IKEA kitchens. IKEA has earned a place as the cliché economical choice for good reason. Their elegant cabinets are sturdy, cost-effective and usually made from sustainable products (they even have a collection based on recycled plastic bottles and reclaimed wood)! If you visit online, their exclusive kitchen-planning tool allows you to visualize their products within your exact measurements and then provides a comprehensive list for shopping. In the store, team members are always available to assist with selections and ideas – just remember to bring your sketches and measurements along, and maybe some pictures. Depending on your needs, you could consider starting with one of their modular kitchens and build up from there. This would be the most inexpensive solution, however, do keep in mind that there is an additional cost for delivery, assembly, and installation. Another tip: buy during one of IKEA’s annual kitchen sales to save more.

Another cost-effective option is building your own cabinets. It does help to have a basic understanding of woodwork, and use of certain tools. Make sure to measure everything precisely. After you measure the wall space for your cabinets, draw a sketch based on these measurements. Choose the wood you want for custom cabinets, label all the parts and then assemble it together. You may also opt to purchase pre-made doors and drawers to make things easier. After you are done, bring the cabinets upright and install to your wall. Although building your own cabinets can be a complex project, if done well, it will bring a lot of pride and satisfaction while also saving you a lot of money. If you do not live near an IKEA, or don’t feel up to par with your woodworking skills, then purchase stock cabinets and supplement with a custom feature here and there. Mixing some stock cabinetry with a couple custom pieces allows you to tailor the experience to you in an affordable way. For example, utilize standard lower cabinets and buy a custom for the integrated refrigerator. Or, add a custom wine rack and switch out a few of the doors with glass insert doors. Stock cabinets generally come in white, brown or unfinished. This provides an opportunity to add your personal flair with paints and stains. Use your budget wisely to make small improvements on the stock pieces that make sense for you. Since they usually come equipped with one or two shelves, modify one with your heirloom china or DIY a magnet spice rack inside of the doors.

For most cabinets (barring some modern or minimalist styles) the finishing touch is hardware. This can be a medium to express your personality without spending too much. Thrift stores are full of unique options which include retro, antique, basic and hand-crafted knobs and handles. Kitchen design always has a significant impact on the rest of the home, and the cabinets play a substantial role in the space due to their size and practical importance.
